Llyn Elsi Reservoir Walk

The walk starts with a fairly steep uphill section, so expect everyone to be a little out of breath by the time you reach the top! The good news is that's the hardest part done. Once you arrive at the reservoir, the rest of the route is much gentler, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the scenery.

Exploring Llyn Elsi

The walk begins behind St Mary's Church on the edge of Betws-y-Coed, where you'll join a forest track leading up through the trees.

The first 15 to 20 minutes are the steepest part of the route, but once you've reached the reservoir, the walk becomes much more relaxed. From there, you can head either left or right around the water, following a circular route that brings you back to where you started.

The paths are a mixture of forest tracks, stone paths, grassy sections and the occasional muddy patch, so sturdy footwear is recommended, especially after rain.

There are plenty of places to stop along the way, whether that's to take in the views, enjoy a picnic or simply watch the water.

On a clear day, you can see across to the Carneddau and Glyderau mountain ranges, making it easy to understand why this is such a popular walk.

This isn't a pushchair-friendly route, but it's a great choice for families with older children who enjoy walking and exploring somewhere a little quieter than the village of Betws y Coed itself.

The walk starts behind St Mary's Church in Betws-y-Coed. There isn't a dedicated car park for the reservoir, but the Railway Station pay-and-display car park is just a short walk from the start of the trail.

Once you leave the village there are no cafés, toilets or other facilities, so it's worth picking up anything you need before setting off. Betws-y-Coed has plenty of cafés, bakeries, shops and public toilets, making it easy to grab lunch or an ice cream after (or before!) your walk.

If you've still got some energy left afterwards, you're perfectly placed to explore more of Betws-y-Coed, browse the local shops or visit one of the nearby waterfalls.
