Penrhos Coastal Park brings together woodland, coastline and wildlife-rich habitats in one beautiful location on Holy Island. With accessible paths, open spaces to explore and plenty of opportunities for nature spotting, it’s a lovely place for families to slow down and enjoy the outdoors.

The coastline offers a completely different adventure to the woodland trails. Small paths lead down towards the shore, where children can search for shells, explore the rocks and look out for seabirds along the water’s edge. Keep watch for coastal birds such as oystercatchers and curlews, while the ferries travelling to and from Holyhead Port add an extra point of interest for younger visitors.

Heading inland, the peaceful woodland paths provide a chance to discover a different side of the park. The trees are filled with birdsong, and the ponds offer opportunities to spot ducks and other water birds. If you’re quiet, patient and very lucky, you might even catch sight of one of the park’s famous red squirrels moving through the trees.

With a network of largely accessible paths winding through the park, it’s suitable for pushchairs, wheelchairs and family bike rides. There are open grassy areas with picnic tables, making it easy to stop for lunch or enjoy the views, while toilets (including accessible facilities) are available near the main car park. Dogs are welcome too, making it a popular spot for family dog walks.

Wildlife to spot at Penrhos Coastal Park

One of the best parts of visiting Penrhos Coastal Park is taking the time to notice the wildlife around you. Each path leads through a different habitat, from peaceful woodland and quiet ponds to the rocky shoreline, giving children plenty of opportunities to discover something new.

The woodland is one of the best places in North Wales to look out for red squirrels. They're incredibly shy, so sightings are never guaranteed, but that's all part of the excitement. Walk quietly, stop every now and then, and keep your eyes up in the trees - you never know what might appear.
