Exploring Prestatyn Central Beach

One of three beaches in Prestatyn, Central Beach offers a wide stretch of sand that's perfect for digging, building sandcastles and enjoying a traditional day by the sea. At low tide, there's even more space to explore, making it a great spot for beach games and family fun.

The promenade runs alongside the beach and continues all the way towards Rhyl and beyond, creating miles of traffic-free coastal path for walking and cycling. Whether you're enjoying a short stroll or making a day of it, there are fantastic views across the Irish Sea in one direction and Prestatyn Hillside in the other.

If you're visiting later in the day, it's worth sticking around for sunset. On clear evenings, the beach can be a beautiful place to watch the sun go down. Grab some fish and chips from town, find a spot on the promenade and enjoy the view.

There's plenty to do nearby too. Families will find a playground, arcades, cafés and the Nova Leisure Centre all within easy reach, making it easy to combine a beach visit with other activities.

For walkers, the beach also marks the northern end of the famous Offa's Dyke National Trail. While most families won't be tackling the entire route, it's a fun piece of local history and a great photo opportunity.

Top tip: Check tide times before you visit. At high tide the beach can be much narrower, while low tide reveals a huge stretch of sand that's perfect for games and sandcastle building. 

Accessibility and getting around

The upper promenade is wide, flat and generally suitable for pushchairs, wheelchairs, mobility aids, cyclists and young children on scooters or balance bikes. Ramps connect the main car parks to the promenade, making access straightforward for most visitors. 

If you're visiting with scooters, rollerblades or balance bikes keep an eye out for gaps in sections of the concrete promenade, as smaller wheels can occasionally catch.

A lower promenade runs closer to the beach and provides another way to enjoy the seafront, although access points are more limited and there are fewer ramps available.

How long should we allow for a visit?

You could easily spend a couple of hours here, but with the beach, playground, arcades and nearby attractions, many families make a half-day or full-day trip of it.

Anything else to know?

If you're an early riser, Prestatyn's weekly Parkrun starts near the Nova Centre every Saturday at 9am. Even if you're not taking part, it's worth being aware that the promenade can be busier than usual around this time.
