Sitting on the opposite side of the Great Orme away from the hustle and bustle of North Shore, West Shore Beach has a much more relaxed feel. If you're after somewhere a little quieter where the children have plenty of space to play, this is the beach we'd recommend.

With a huge sandy beach, rolling sand dunes and views across Conwy Bay towards Mynydd y Dref, it's easy to spend a few hours here without feeling rushed. Whether your children are building sandcastles, collecting shells or simply running up and down the dunes, there's plenty to keep them entertained.

Exploring West Shore Beach

One of the best things about West Shore beach is just how much space there is. When the tide is out, the beach stretches for what feels like miles, so even on a busy day you can usually find your own little spot.

The sand dunes are always a hit with children and make a beach day feel a bit more adventurous. Kids can spend ages climbing up and running back down them! Down on the beach, there's plenty of room for paddling, digging and, of course, building sandcastles.

The promenade is wide, flat and perfect for pushchairs, wheelchairs, scooters and bikes. There are benches all the way along if you fancy stopping for a drink or just sitting and watching the sea, and there's a playground at the Great Orme end that's well worth a visit if you've got younger children.

If you visit on a windy day, don't forget to pack a kite. You'll often see kite surfers out on the water too, which is always fun for children to watch.

One of our favourite times to visit is towards the evening. As the sun starts to set, you'll usually find families sitting on the promenade with fish and chips or a picnic, making the most of the views before heading home or back to their hotel for the night.

Planning your visit

There's a pay-and-display car park next to the West Shore Beach Café, as well as free on-street parking nearby. If you're parking on the surrounding roads, please be mindful of local residents.

You'll find public toilets and the West Shore Beach Café next to the beach, while a pub sits at the opposite end of the promenade. There's also a corner shop and a fish and chip shop just a short walk away if you fancy picking something up before heading onto the beach.

If you've still got some energy left, you can walk along the coast towards Deganwy or head up the Great Orme for another family adventure.

Why parents love it

  • Much quieter than North Shore. Also, unlike its sister beach it’s sand and not rocks.

  • A huge sandy beach with loads of space to play.

  • Sand dunes that children love exploring.

  • A flat promenade that's great for prams, scooters and bikes.

  • Playground, café, toilets and parking all close by.

  • One of the best places in Llandudno to watch the sunset.

Top Tip: Bring a kite on a windy day - you won’t regret it!

FAQs

Is West Shore Beach suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs?

Yes. The promenade is flat, wide and suitable for both pushchairs and wheelchairs. Access onto the beach itself is more difficult because of the sand.

Is West Shore Beach dog friendly?

Yes. Dogs are welcome on parts of West Shore Beach all year round, although some sections have seasonal restrictions between 1 May and 30 September. There is still plenty of beach where dogs are allowed, but it's always worth checking the signs when you arrive.

Are there toilets and places to eat?

Yes. Public toilets and the West Shore Beach Café are next to the beach, with a pub at the opposite end of the promenade. There's also a corner shop and fish and chip shop just around the corner if you need supplies for the beach.

Is West Shore Beach worth visiting all year round?

Definitely. Summer is great for paddling and beach days, but it's just as enjoyable during the cooler months for a fresh sea air walk along the promenade or watching the sunset. Just bear in mind that it can get quite windy, so it's worth bringing an extra layer.

How far away is West Shore beach from Llandudno town centre?

All of Llandudno is extremely walkable. From the town centre it's around a 15 - 20 minute walk (longer with smaller legs mind!). And if you drive it won't take longer the 3 -4 minutes to get there.
