…the old man is definitely snoring.

And that brings us to the big question - what can we do with the kids, when it’s absolutely tipping it down?

No worries, because we have plenty of options for you. From Anglesey to Wrexham and more, here are 5 great indoor activities to help keep the kids happy, entertained and energised on those wet and glum days!

  1. Pili Palas Nature World - Anglesey / Ynys Môn

Good to know...

  • Indoor wildlife experience

Nestled in Porthaethwy (Menai Bridge, or Y Borth, if you’re a local!), Pili Palas Nature World is a fantastic choice when it comes to a rainy day option.

Experiencing wildlife indoors and up close - from beautiful birds to colourful butterflies, tropical lizards and cheeky meerkats, exotic creepy crawlies, and familiar animal friends at the farm yard and barn - Pili Palas has it all.

And if that wasn’t enough, the Play Zone features soft play complete with a toddler area for 0 - 3 year olds, a jungle-themed main play area for older children, and a small café serving snacks and hot & cold drinks. So let the kids go wild (figuratively speaking!) and have some fun, whilst blowing off some steam with a tea or coffee. The best part? The Play Zone is also included in your entry fee when you book a ticket!

  1. Boathouse Climbing Centre - Llandudno

Good to know...

  • Indoor climbing adventures from toddlers to teens and beyond

  • 5-minute walk from Llandudno's high street

This old boathouse is full of stories, and saved countless lives for over a century - and now it has a new lease of life as a climbing centre.

Keeping in step with its proud history, the RNLI Lifeboats logo still adorns the entrance to a world of fun and activities - bouldering, climbing tower, junction wall, tunnelling in the "Human Rat Run", abseiling... and for those seeking the ultimate buzz, the "Leap of Faith" (it's exactly what you think it is!).

With activities for all ages, from toddlers and up (and even folks 70+ enjoying a climb!) this is a brilliant all-round family activity, allowing all family members - and even extended family - to get involved.

Snacks and hot & cold drinks are also available to stay fuelled-up, too!

  1. SC2 - Rhyl

Good to know...

  • Indoor water park with pool & slides for all ages

Situated on Rhyl’s West Parade promenade, SC2 is perfect option for one of those rained-in high-energy days, and no slouch when it comes to activities - boasting an indoor water park with three slides, two soft play areas, and ninja tag. Whew!

SC2’s waterpark features a pool designed for play, with a shallow area that has a max depth of 30cm - perfect for parents and toddlers to enjoy a paddle - and a deeper main pool, with a max depth of 90cm. The Piranha Play area is packed with interactive water play, from water cannons, to jets, shark showers, water wheels, tipping troughs, slides and an area with higher platforms and interactive water features for exploring and adventuring. And of course, for the older thrill seekers there’s the triple threat slide-combo of The Boomerang, The Anaconda and The Speedster… they’re best experienced in person, so we won’t spoil the excitement here!

If you want to keep the fun going (or just want something a bit more fuss-free) there’s the jungle-themed Adventure Play and Rainforest Play soft play areas, catering to children from ages 0 - 13. The Rainforest Diner café also provides a welcome break for snacks, hot and cold drinks and food.

  1. Bounce Below at Zip World Llechwedd - Blaenau Ffestiniog

“Prepare for some high-octane adventure, kids… inside some disused Victorian slate caverns!” - Desperate Parent

This is not a sentence most parents ever really truthfully envision themselves saying to the youngsters. But all humour aside, the above statement is 100% accurate - and Bounce Below is an absolute unique gem, and possibly the most North Walian way to have a great day out - its location a confluence of North Wales’ proud slate mining history and Gwynedd’s incredible landscape; re-purposing the past to work with the present.

In a cavern system of 6 chambers - twice the size of London’s St. Paul’s Cathedral - the network of ultra-robust, thick elastic netting is not only an engineering marvel, it’s just such incredible fun. With headroom ample enough for an adult to bounce nearly double their own height, and then some, there’s plenty of space for some gravity-defying thrills. And, if you can believe it, you can also grab a burlap sack and barrel down four different slides, too!

One thing to note - there is a minimum height restriction of 1 metre for entry, so this experience is likely not suitable for little ones 3 and under, unfortunately.

  1. Xplore! Science Discovery Centre - Wrexham / Wrecsam

Good to know...

  • Indoor science & space play for inquisitive minds

  • Planetarium experience can be added to your ticket for £2.50 per person

  • Café available with hot food serving Welsh produce

Entrance to the Xplore! Science Discovery Centre in Wrexham

If all the high-energy activities we’ve just covered feels a bit much, for the kids (or just yourself!), Xplore! Science Discovery Centre is just the option you need; particularly if you’d prefer something a little calmer, and mentally stimulating, for the family.

With 85 exhibits that encourage children to learn about science, space and physics through participation and play, there is a big focus on experiential teaching that makes for both a fun and educational day out. And with all General Admission tickets, this includes a live stage show with a playful twist on learning… like the aquatic “Horrible H2O”, the all-about-volacanos “All Fired Up”, and Halloween-themed “Science of Monsters”!

And if all that learning and knowledge brings up a curious hunger or thirst for the little ones, the Xplore! Café has you covered, serving hot food, drinks, snacks and treats.
