1. Discover the National Slate Museum

The National Slate Museum is a must-visit when exploring Llanberis, especially if your children enjoy discovering how things work and exploring somewhere a little different.

Set inside the former Dinorwic Slate Quarry workshops, the museum brings Wales’ slate history to life. Families can explore the old workshops, see the huge Victorian machinery and learn what life was like for the people who worked in the quarry.

It’s also one of the best rainy-day options in Llanberis, and with free entry, it’s a great addition to a family day out without adding much cost.

2. Explore Padarn Country Park and Llyn Padarn

Padarn Country Park is one of the easiest places to spend a few hours in Llanberis, and it’s completely free to enjoy.

The lakeside paths offer beautiful views across Llyn Padarn towards the mountains, with plenty of places to stop for a picnic, watch the water or let children explore. It’s a lovely spot for a relaxed walk, and you don’t need to have a big adventure planned to enjoy it.

On a sunny day, this is the kind of place where you can easily lose track of time. And if you have a paddle board, it’s well worth bringing it here.

3.Explore Dolbadarn Castle

No visit to Llanberis feels complete without a stop at Dolbadarn Castle.

This small medieval castle sits in a fantastic position overlooking Llyn Padarn, surrounded by mountains and woodland. The short walk to reach the ruins adds to the experience, and children can explore the remains of the tower while imagining what life might have been like here hundreds of years ago.

It’s a great example of how some of the best family stops in North Wales don’t need to take up the whole day.

4. Find Ceunant Mawr Waterfall

There’s something about finding a waterfall that makes any walk feel like an adventure, and Ceunant Mawr is a lovely little hidden gem.

The walk takes you upwards before reaching the waterfall tucked away in the gorge. It’s not a very long walk, making it a good option for families who want to explore without committing to a full day hike.

The paths can be uneven and slippery after wet weather, so sensible footwear is recommended.

5. Explore Dinorwic Slate Quarry

For children who enjoy exploring places that feel a little wild and enjoy longer more challenging walk, Dinorwic Slate Quarry is for you. 

The old quarry landscape is unlike a typical family walk, with huge slate workings, old buildings and winding paths to discover. It’s easy to imagine what the area would have looked like when the quarry was full of workers and activity.

It’s also a great way to continue learning about the slate industry after visiting the National Slate Museum.

6. Ride the Llanberis Lake Railway

For a special treat, the Llanberis Lake Railway is a lovely way to see more of the area without tiring out little legs. And, even better, it’s priced to be affordable.

The heritage steam train travels alongside Llyn Padarn, with views across the lake, towards Dolbadarn Castle and the surrounding mountains. It’s a slower-paced adventure that younger children especially tend to love (and it’s usually a hit with adults too!).

The train is a paid attraction, but it works well as part of a budget-friendly day out when combined with some of the free places nearby.

7. Visit the Blade of the Giants

While exploring Llyn Padarn, keep an eye out for the Blade of the Giants sculpture.

This striking piece of artwork celebrates Welsh heritage and makes a fun stop during a walk around the lake. Children often enjoy spotting it and getting a photo beside something so unusual.
